A marvelous voyage through four apparently unrelated worlds, each of them cultivated a new musical landscape in a new century: from Lisztian-Wagnerian Berg’s Sonata op. 1 to Mompou’s Variations on a Theme of Chopin, going through folk-inspired Falla’s Fantasía Baetica and Bartók’s Sonata, Javier Laso gives spellbinding performances that sound fresh, as if heard for the first time.
Javier Laso was born in Fribourg, Switzerland, in 1975. He studied piano at the COSCYL in Salamanca with J.J. Diego and J. Ponce where he was awarded honorable mentions in all grades. During that period he also studied with Almudena Cano and received masterclasses from Ramzi Yassa, Joaquín Achúcarro and Dimitri Bashkirov, among others. Between 1994 and 1999 he underwent postgraduate studies at the “Franz Liszt” Academy in Budapest with pianists Rita Wagner, Férenc Rados and Péter Nagy, who had a decisive influence on his musical development.
Javier obtained different honorable mentions in competitions such as “Frechilla-Zuloaga”, “Maria Canals”, as well the second prize in the “María Orán” Chamber Music Competition and the first prize in the “Pedro Espinosa” piano competition.
He has worked as a teacher at the COSCYL, in Salamanca, and since 2004 he has been a piano teacher at the Conservatory of Music of the Canary Islands, combining his teaching activity with a prolific activity as a concert pianist.
His recording work has been greatly praised by critics, having recently obtained the nomination for the “Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik” with his album dedicated to Schubert and Schumann (Eudora Records). He will soon present an album dedicated to 20th century music and another for four hands with Josep Colom, both works for Eudora Records.
The influence of Josep Colom on Javier Laso has been decisive for his teachings, his capacity for inspiration and the support provided in recent years.
